Drawing the Figure with Digital Charcoal

A Demonstration from block-in to final rendering!
Gage Artistic Director Gary Faigin demonstrates how the same principals that apply to analog figure drawing translate to the digital domain. Using tools that are the equivalent of “digital charcoal”, Faigin progresses from a basic block-in of a standing figure, to a summary of the tonal relationships, and then rendering with more detail and luminosity. Audience members can follow along using charcoal on bond paper, the closest analog equivalent.

Learn to Draw Hands in Trois Crayon

This drawing demonstration will teach key details for understanding the structure and landmarks in the hands, while exploring the beauty of working in “Trois Crayon.” A Trois Crayon drawing uses sanguine (earth red), black and white pencils on a toned paper, a lovely traditional style that create subtle life-like tones and dimensional form on paper. Learn how to organize the values of these materials into light and shadow, and make a lovely study of that important, elegant and pesky detail of drawing— the hands.

Keep in mind that the paper you use will determine what paper you get out i.e. tissue paper will yield thin, translucent sheets whereas envelopes and cardstock will give you heavier, water resistant paper
An old blender (I have a designated papermaking blender that I picked up at Goodwill, you won’t necessarily want to use this one for shakes after making paper with it)
A deep (6”-10” high) tub of water.
This will hold your pouring mold and must be at large enough to hold it’s 5 ½” x 8 ½“ frame with some room along the edges

Sculpting Demo Process and Q&A

This 2 hour workshop will focus on Ceramics, hand-building and figuration and aims at sharing both techniques and ideas behind my work. Alessandro will give an overview of his approach from start to finish, focusing on:

-Firing
-Finishing
He will be using videos to document his process, and quick demos to highlight tricks and talk about specific tools and materials. Throughout the second half, he will talk about his work and answer questions from participants.

Rendering the Moon

We’re going to do a black and white drawing of the moon on toned paper. We’ll start by toning our paper with loose charcoal powder, and working reductively to find the overall light and shadow side, and then go in with charcoal and white chalk pencils to render more specifically.

Painting a Portrait with Zorn Palette

I will demonstrate how Anders Zorn used just 4 colors to create an amazing portrait. Using one of his paintings as an example I take you through the process of painting the portrait in 4 simple steps.
Supply List
Palette: Bring a gray palette.
You can make a gray palette by painting the back of a piece of plexiglass with gray acrylic) or simply use a gessoed gray panel as a palette.
Brushes: Any professional brushes in the following sizes

Kolinsky Sable or synthetic (pointed) #4 (1)

Gesture Armature and Drapery

60” of 16 gauge wire, (any 16g wire will do)

Paper towel, mineral spirits or paint thinner for cleaning wire
Thin, flexible work gloves/gardening gloves if desired.

Hot glue gun, 2-4 glue sticks

The artist will be using Clip Studio Paint EX, but feel free to follow along with a digital program of your choice!
