Skittles Trompe L’oeil Painting

Come join us to paint some Skittles so realistic people will try to grab them off the painting. Tromp l’oeil is a genre of painting which use various techniques to create illusion such that the subject of the painting looks real.

Supply List 

Oil color: Alizarin crimson, Cadmium red medium, Burnt siennna, Cadmium yellow light, Ultramarine blue, Chromatic green light

Brush: synthetic round brush no. 2 and 4

Gamsol, palette, palette cup, palette knife and paper towel

Skittles will be painted with direct observation. Participants can observe the set up on zoom.

Clay Gestures

We are going to be making fast figures out of clay. If you want to follow along, get some clay, a board and a place to work where you might make a mess and some noise, oh, and a whacking stick. It’s totally fun!

Supply List 

Board, ½” – ¾” plywood or other, pref Square, ~ 8 x 8” – 12 x 12”

Water based clay. About half a bag, ~ 12#, Approximately the size of a baby’s head

One whole bag, 25# would be plenty enough for a couple figures

Whacking Stick.

1×2 x 8” (3/4 x 1.5” x ~ 8”) can find these below yard signs, as garden stakes. Just cut a length and be sure to sand the edges to take off any sharp splintery bits.

If you use a garden stake, cut the sharp end off at 4” or so to use later.

Alternately, an old wooden spoon, a few paint sticks taped together, an old shoe…

Bamboo skewer, alternately an old knitting needle

Fettling knife, butter knife will work

Any modeling tools you may have

Plastic bag for covering work, Plastic sheeting, or cardboard to protect delicate surfaces.

Underpainting and Wipe-Out Techniques
with Tenaya Sims

Layering techniques in oil painting can be complex. 

In this 3-hour session LIVE from Equinox Studios, Tenaya will demonstrate how he often approaches the ‘underpainting’ stage of his figurative works, on a painting currently in development. This technique, which he refers to as the ‘Wipe-out/Add-in’, is used to bridge the drawing layer to the overpainting layers. 

He’ll begin the session with an overview to provide context, and then jump right into the demo. At about 5:30 he’ll stop for Q&A until 6:00.

Gary Faigin demonstrates the stages in creating a digital painting from a clothed model.  From the initial sketch, to the block-in, to the final details, Faigin will explain how digital painting is, and is not, like its analog counterpart.  He will also describe the digital tools he is using, including the brushes, layers, and zoom and mirroring.  Participants are encouraged to ask questions.
