Caravaggio: The King of Light and Shadow
with Dr. Susan Brangers

Friday | Oct 23 – Nov 20 | 9:30am-11:00am

Artwork: Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio, Conversion of Saint Paul, 1600-01

Through the play of bright light and deep shadows, Caravaggio created an intense realism and heightened drama. These qualities invoked both strong criticism and ardent admiration of his work. In this lecture, we will examine Caravaggio’s paintings, the reception they received from patrons, and explore the influence he had on artists in Italy and beyond. This exploration will include paintings by Artemisia Gentileschi, Jusepe (Jose) de Ribera, and Georges de la Tour.

Dr. Susan Fugate Brangers has a PhD in art history from the University of Louisville. Her primary area of study is Roman architecture that grew out of her experience of working on a Roman archaeological site in Portugal. Her other areas of interest include Greco-Roman sculpture, Islamic art and architecture, and Baroque art. She has taught at universities, colleges, in Kentucky, Pennsylvania, and Delaware. Susan has conducted international study programs in Portugal, Spain, and Italy. Courses she has taught have included: Greek and Roman art, Hellenistic art, Early Christian and Medieval art, art of Islamic Spain, Early and Medieval Islamic art, and aesthetics.

Painting Your Indoor Space
with Grace Athena Flott

Friday | Oct 23 – Nov 20 | 9:30am-12:30pm

The spaces we inhabit may be ordinary. but when we attempt to document them with paint they become a world of complexity. In this class we will look to the nooks and crannies around us for lessons in composition, drawing, value, and color. Through the practice of observation, students will work through one painting of a scene from inside their own home. The indirect painting method, by which layers are built up over the course of five weeks, will be broken down into small steps: lighting, set-up, compositional value studies, block-in drawing, underpainting, color passes, and edges. Weekly demonstrations, presentations, and individual feedback will guide students in strategies to accurately describe the unique character of their own space. All classes will be held live on Zoom.
